The girl in the orange grove woke up every day in her little room in the little trailer. She had a little family. A mom, a dad, and a brother. Sometimes the dad would find cats at work and bring them home. Sometimes the cats stayed. Sometimes the cats left. This made the girl sad and she decided that it was her job to take care of all of the animals too, the orange grove, and Pappy.
She watched her dad work very hard and for very long days. She decided she wanted to help so that he never had to work. So some days, she spent hours trying to enter something called Publishers Clearing House. She just knew one day that they would knock on her door and her dad would never have to work again. She still wishes that.
The girl wanted to help her mom too. Her mom was sick a lot and tired. She got very sad sometimes. So her Granny and Pappy would have many sleepovers for the girl and her brother and all of her cousins. Granny would make them pancakes and floured, fried bacon and there was always orange juice from the orange trees.

The girl wondered if there were orange trees anywhere else in the world and if there was a girl there too that loved them. But the only places she knew of were the ones in the National Geographic Magazines that her uncle handed down to her. She would look at them many times and imagine what it would be like to live somewhere else. But she quickly dismissed this thought. It was understood she would always be there just like her Pappy and her dad. Pappy said it was the greatest place on earth. But the little girl still wondered.
