This is a continuation of The Girl In The Orange Grove series of how I ended up in Italy!

The girl in the orange grove was now a married girl in the orange grove, with a husband and a double wide trailer and a burned down kitchen.

It took them many months to fix that kitchen. And she cooked no more fried potatoes. She wouldn’t fry potatoes for many years.

Times were tough. Nate was trying to find a job as an insurance adjuster. He had taken the test and passed the first time. The girl in the orange was not worried. She had a feeling that things would work out, even though Nate couldn’t find a job quickly.  And she knew Pappy would be bringing her some canned goods each day to see them thru. He never let them go hungry.

Plus, their garden was growing. You didn’t let anyone go hungry in the orange grove.

The girl in the orange grove was starting to realize that decisions she had made quickly at 18 were going to be permanent. Marriage was permanent. This she had been taught. She knew though that she wanted kids of her own, and Nate did not. She remembered him saying he wouldn’t change his mind, ever. And yet, she thought she could change his mind. His growing up years were tough. And he didn’t think he was capable to have a family.

She wasn’t sure what to do.  But she knew she had made the commitment to get married. And she would pray about it. That she did. She prayed that somehow, her life would be fulfilled, even without children. She prayed that she would feel needed and loved and help others. She prayed to be happy despite the lack of children and an emptiness she felt in her heart.
