The Hard Work

In some ways, it was good to be back in the orange grove. Rachael spent her days working part time in a consignment store, and then went to the grocery store, bought what she needed to put in her little refrigerator with coupons her and Granny clipped, and headed to her mom’s to cook it. Right thru the orange grove. She would make sure to make enough for Granny and Pappy to have some too. Pappy always exclaimed, “that’s the best thing I’ve ever ate.”

She dreamed of the day she would put her own trailer next to her mom and dad. Granny and Pappy would still be on the other side of the grove. And that 78 Buick? That 1978 Buick was pretty good. As long as she didn’t make those left hand turns.

She picked out a spot in the orange grove and Pappy had it all taken care of. Neighbors didn’t want another trailer in the neighborhood, and they put up a big fight. But Pappy wasn’t having it. He won that battle, and soon, Nathan’s dad found a used trailer for them.

Problem is, it had been thru a flood. And so they got to ripping out floors and redoing it. But it was taking a long time. They decided they would fix it a bit more and sell it. They were able to get a brand new, bigger, double wide trailer that was green and white and just perfect. All they had to do was get it to the orange grove.

Nathan and his dad hooked it up and brought it right to the orange grove where they set it all up and poured concrete block underneath. One block at a time. It was hard work, but this girl was back in the orange grove. And it didn’t matter to her. She worked as hard as she could and her and Pappy even planted a garden.

And he was very happy that any orange trees that were in the way of their new trailer got replanted.

But things were hard. And they were not about to get easier.
