The House

This is a continuation of the girl in the orange grove series, explaining what led me to Italy.
The double wide trailer in the orange grove was perfect. Sure, the bright green carpet and third hand furniture was not everyone’s choice of decor. But to the girl in the orange grove, who now had a Labrador puppy named Skanky, life was good. Except when she had to leave every morning to drive to the bank to work. She hated leaving Skanky. But he had to go to work too.
Every day, at the same exact time, the girl in the orange grove would go to work and Skanky would walk to Granny and Pappy’s house. “The house”. That’s what everyone called it in the family. Because it was a house built by Granny and Pappy in the 40’s. And it wasn’t a trailer like everyone else in the family lived in. “The house” was now Skanky’s place of work, and he took his job seriously. He would go to their house each weekday and sit with them and their dogs, Sassy and Cuddles. Granny would fix everyone lunch, Skanky included, and then they would take a walk in the orange grove.

When the girl in the orange grove was done with work each day, exactly at 5 pm, Skanky would walk back to his double wide trailer to greet her and have his second dinner. Granny swore she didn’t feed him dinner, but his waistline said different.
The girl in the orange grove now had a pretty comfortable life. But she felt like she was responsible for all of the family there. Her mom and dad and Granny and Pappy. She spent her weekends happily mowing all the acres of land and cooking. She so desperately wanted to be a mother. And she kept trying to reconcile that wasn’t going to happen. She kept trying to fill her life with many things. But nothing was helping.
Life went on and yet, the girl in the orange grove felt like she was missing something. What was her purpose? Would she always be here? When she went to her great uncles funeral, the minister said about him, “born in Lutz, died in Lutz.” And all of a sudden she knew she didn’t want that to be her. There was nothing wrong with his life. Or any of her family’s lives and their decision to stay. But all of a sudden , she felt trapped. And so her and Nate decided to built a house too. It made no sense. They were putting down even more roots, trying to make everyone else happy. But, the plans were drawn up and that was that. Another house was going to be put in the middle of the orange grove.
